Baratang Island

Baratang is 100 kms away from Port Blair. One has to travel by road and cross a creek on a vehicle ferry at Middle Strait to reach Baratang.

From Baratang island (Nilambur Jetty) Lime Stone Caves are half and hour boat ride through a wide creek which leads to Nayadera Jetty and further one and half km. walk through tropical forest. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are in the middle of the Bengal Bay. Therefore, you should not miss the fascinating experience of reaching Andaman and Nicobar Islands by ship. Passenger ships connect Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam, which are major citieinmainland India with Port Blair. These ships are available regularly and help one to make a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

It takes about three days to reach Port Blair at sea. A ship usually stops for about 2 days at the port before leaving for a reverse trip, that is, from Port Blair to Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam. Auto-rickshaws here at local places are the second form of preferred transportation as rates are standardized. You can hire them either from the marketplace or flag them down the main road

Taxi: The main mode of transport is by road, and there is also the island water transport and sometimes air transport. A 240 km stretch between Port Blair and Maya Bunder is covered by a bus service. In between Port Blair and Maya Bunder lies two islands, and buses and passengers are transported by boats. The islands to be crossed are Baratang and Kadamtala Islands. Then a town called Rangat must be crossed to reach fate. From Maya Bunder, they have to change the buses to travel up to Kalighat, Diglipur, which is the Andaman endpoint.
Bus: Hundreds of buses run between Port Blair and South Andaman convenience of passengers. Apart from the buses tourist taxis, maxi cabs and call taxis on the islands, the bus service offered by the government is limited. Train: Andaman does not have the train station. Chennai Central (MAS) is a close railway station connected to Mumbai to be closest to Andaman on the railroad.
